| Len's Mother
Fannie's cousin
Gregory Horowitz
Gregory Horowitz was Fannie's first cousin, the son of her mother's
sister. He grew up in Chon, Fannie's place of birth, and showed
musical talent at an early age. He studied violin at the Odessa
Conservatory, where one of his classmates was Nathan Milstein*.
He became concertmaster of the Warsaw Symphony. He left Poland
a few years before the outbreak of World War II, and came
to the United States (via Argentina). He later played viola
with the Los Angeles Symphony and several others, as well
as organizing his own small orchestra that played in Southern
California and Nevada. He died about 1963.
*This is what I remember Gregory telling me. On the other
hand, Fannie told me that the family left Chon so that Gregory
could study in Warsaw, and my cousin Justin Wolfson says that
he trained there. I assume he studied in both cities, first
in Warsaw, and later in Odessa.
| Q. This a Jan 2nd, 1978. You say you made this [album]
A. Yes, I made it.
Q. Okay. Now, here's the first page. Who...
A. Gregory.
Q. That's Gregory. Oh, yeah. He has his violin. Now,
what's the uniform?
A. I don't know. It's just a cadet sort of.
[All students in higher-level institutions of learning in Russia wore military-style uniforms.] | |
| Q. I see. And this...
A. That's him too. |
|
| Q. Now, who is the man here?
A. That's his father.
Q. His father. How is he related to you?
A. He's my aunt's husband. My aunt...my mother's sister,
my aunt. That's her. She was good looking.
A. Take a look at her. Take a good look. She looks
like Bessie [Fannie's sister].
Q. Yes, a little bit.
