Len's cousin

Turks

Len: Say that again

M: Life is the best teacher. You can throw away the books, it means absolutely nothing. We have seen people that have never seen a toothbrush in their life. They've never seen soap. And these people had teeth that would have been the envy of any Hollywood star.

Len: They don't eat sugar.

M: No, they eat sugar in fruit, like, you know, but there they got fruit, you know. So they have their amout of sugar, all right. What they do they eat a lot of pasta, an awful lot of pasta, an awful lot of bread. And no vegetables, no vegetables at all. If they used to see us eat a cabbage, so they used to say that we are like cattle by eating grass. No vegetables at all. They wouldn't eat raw potatoes. They used to grow potatoes because there were Russians — we called them colonists — because the Russians brought in people to colonize this area, and they used to have potatoes. I think potatoes was one of the most expensive things there, because they were scarce. But they didn't eat any vegetables at all.

Flour, a lot of meat, and a lot of dairy products from the sheep and goats.

Sonia: They eat meat, steak and pork, they eat meat. To them in a family a whole cattle became equal one couple [tape unclear]. One couple. They're big. They're, what do you call it, apachov. [phonetic] Big one. But in the oven, built in a big pot, a big one, a black one, and they put in the boiling [?]water, and they put in the meat, a cow in there, and they eat the whole thing. They eat.

M: ... for the simple reason they get nothing for their work.

Sonia: They [unclear] the market, and they smoke marijuana, hashish, there. They smoke there. They don't work.

M: They style there is that the women work, not the men.

L: Now here you are talking about Asian men.

M: Of course. We talk about meat a lot. The Russians haven't got meat. But the Asians, they have a lot of meat.

L: I see. Now, tell us about the Asians. You said you were up near the White Sea, and then you were moved...
